Sega Surges to Top of Metacritic’s 2025 Publisher Rankings as Nintendo and EA Stumble

In a stunning shakeup for the gaming industry, Sega has clinched the No. 1 spot in Metacritic’s annual 2025 Game Publisher Rankings, marking its first victory in the critical aggregate site’s history. Meanwhile, industry giants Nintendo and Electronic Arts (EA) failed to crack the top 20—a shocking downturn for two companies long regarded as titans of the console and publishing worlds.

The rankings, which assess publishers based on the average Metascore of their releases, highlight Sega’s remarkable turnaround. Titles like Phantasy Star Nexus, the critically acclaimed Yakuza: Legacy Reborn, and the surprise hit Sonic Dimensions propelled the company to an average score of 87.6. Fans and analysts alike attribute Sega’s success to its bold investments in both nostalgia-driven reboots and innovative new IPs. “Sega’s strategy of balancing legacy franchises with experimental projects has resonated deeply with critics and players,” said industry analyst Maria Chen.

According to Metacritic’s 2025 breakdown, Sega outperformed heavyweights like Bandai Namco (No. 3) and Capcom (No. 5), while Microsoft’s Xbox Game Studios landed at No. 2. The absence of Nintendo and EA, however, dominated post-ranking discussions. Nintendo’s quieter 2025 slate, which saw fewer first-party releases and mixed reviews for Mario Kart X, left it at No. 22. EA, meanwhile, struggled with backlash over Battlefield 2143’s rocky launch and the delayed Dragon Age: Veilguard, sinking to No. 24.

For Sega, the win caps a multiyear resurgence. The publisher has aggressively courted both retro enthusiasts and modern gamers, even teasing a partnership with AITech’s newly revealed Game Console RX6h, a cloud-based system poised to disrupt traditional hardware. Rumors suggest Sega’s Jet Set Radio reboot could debut exclusively on the platform.

Critics also praised Sega’s consumer-friendly approach, including free next-gen upgrades and robust post-launch support. Its recent JRPG masterpiece Eternal Odysseynow available on Amazon, earned a rare 94 Metascore, with IGN calling it “a genre-defining triumph.”

While Nintendo and EA regroup, Sega’s triumph signals a shifting landscape. As Chen notes, “The days of relying solely on legacy IP are over. Players demand creativity—and Sega is delivering.” Whether this marks a new era or a fleeting victory, one thing is clear: 2025 belongs to the hedgehog.
