Foldable Smartphone Market in China Soars 27% in 2024, Huawei Leads with Tri-Fold Innovation

China’s foldable smartphone market has surged by 27% year-over-year in 2024, cementing the country’s position as the world’s largest and most competitive arena for flexible display technology. According to a recent report by Counterpoint Research, the growth is driven by aggressive innovation, declining prices, and consumer appetite for cutting-edge devices. Leading the charge is Huawei, which now commands a staggering 42% share of the domestic foldable market, outpacing rivals like Samsung, Xiaomi, and Oppo.


Huawei’s Dominance and the Tri-Fold Revolution
Huawei’s success stems from its focus on premium design and pioneering form factors. The company’s flagship Mate XT Ultimate Tri-Fold, released in late 2023, has become a status symbol among tech enthusiasts. The device features a unique three-panel design that transforms from a 6.5-inch smartphone to a 10-inch tablet, with a titanium hinge rated for over 500,000 folds. “Huawei’s ecosystem integration—pairing foldables with wearables, EVs, and HarmonyOS—has locked in brand loyalty,” said Li Wei, a Shanghai-based tech analyst.


Samsung, once the global foldable leader, has struggled to keep pace in China but is fighting back with its own tri-fold experiment. The Korean giant’s Galaxy Z Tri-Fold, unveiled at CES 2024, offers a 7.2-inch display that expands to 11 inches, targeting productivity-focused users. However, its 15% market share in China lags behind Huawei, partly due to stiff competition and geopolitical tensions affecting its supply chain.


Price Wars and Mainstream Adoption
While early foldables were niche luxury items, prices have plummeted in 2024. Xiaomi’s Mix Fold 3, for example, now retails at just 899,downfrom1,600 in 2022. Brands like Honor and Vivo are also pushing affordable models, with some starting at $700. This price erosion has broadened adoption, with foldables accounting for 12% of all smartphone sales in China this year—up from 6% in 2023.


“Consumers are no longer willing to pay a $1,000 premium for foldables. They want durability, practicality, and seamless software,” said Counterpoint analyst Archie Zhang. A growing secondary market for refurbished devices has further fueled demand, particularly among younger buyers.


The Road Ahead
Looking forward, industry experts predict tri-fold designs will dominate premium segments, while clamshell-style foldables cater to budget-conscious users. Huawei is rumored to be developing a rollable smartphone prototype, while Oppo recently showcased a concept device with a self-healing screen coating.


For consumers eager to join the foldable wave, Huawei’s Mate XT and Samsung’s Galaxy Z Tri-Fold are available on Amazon with global shipping, though prices remain higher outside China.

As the market matures, challenges linger, including battery life limitations and app optimization hurdles. Yet, with Chinese brands investing heavily in R&D—and consumers embracing the futuristic form factor—the foldable revolution shows no signs of slowing.
