CapCut, the video editing app developed by ByteDance, has resumed operations in the United States after a brief suspension. On January 21, 2025, users who had the app installed received a notification expressing gratitude for their "patience and support" and confirming the app's return.
This development follows the enactment of the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, which mandated that ByteDance sell its U.S. operations by January 19, 2025, to continue operating in the country. When ByteDance failed to secure a sale, the Supreme Court upheld the ban on ByteDance apps, including CapCut.
In response, President Donald Trump signed an executive order on January 20, 2025, extending the deadline for ByteDance to divest its U.S. assets by 75 days. This order temporarily lifted the ban, allowing CapCut to resume service.
Despite the app's return, CapCut remains unavailable for download or updates on major app stores like Apple's App Store and Google Play Store in the U.S. Users who had previously installed the app can continue to use it, but new users or those who have uninstalled the app cannot download it at this time.
The situation remains fluid, with ongoing discussions about ByteDance's compliance with U.S. regulations and the future availability of its apps in the country. Users are advised to stay informed through official channels for the latest updates.
